⚡🏠 Electrical Fire Safety Week – Steps to keep your home safe 🔌🔥

Electrical Fire Safety Week gives us all a timely nudge to check our electrical appliances and stay ahead of potential fire risks. Electrical fires can start quickly and spread fast, so we’re sharing these steps to help you use appliances and chargers safely, reduce risk at home and keep your family safe.

Please take a moment to read these reminders and pass them on to friends, neighbours and family members. Sharing safety advice really does make a difference.

Register and recall checks

Check for recalls before using new or second-hand items.

Use the correct charger supplied with the product.

Avoid overloaded sockets

Use one plug per socket where possible.

If using an extension lead, check the amp rating and don’t daisy‑chain leads.

Keep cables untangled and away from heat or water.

Battery safety (including e-bikes/e-scooters/mobile devices)

Charge on a hard, flat surface, away from soft furnishings.

Never charge overnight or when you’re out or near an exit.

Don't use batteries that are swollen, hot, or damaged. Please dispose of them safely as soon as possible.

Dispose of batteries at local recycling points and centres – don’t bin them.

Quick home checks

Look for frayed cables, damaged plugs or burn marks around sockets.

Keep ventilation clear around fridges, freezers and tumble dryers.

Switch off electricals when not in use, especially overnight.

Test your smoke alarms regularly to make sure they beep and alert you in the event of a fire.

Remember, if a fire starts - get out, stay out, call 999.
